Moroccan Scientists Analyze Global COVID-19 Genomes in National Research Project

Moroccan researchers based in Rabat have analyzed more than 3,000 COVID-19 virus genomes worldwide. This study is part of a national project.
The coalition, made up of researchers from the medical biotechnology laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Rabat, the Faculty of Sciences of Rabat, the emergency medical and surgical center of the Mohammed V Military Hospital and the Mohammed VI University of Health Sciences, conducted this study.
The work of this study made it possible to determine the geographical distribution of virus genomes in more than 58 countries, describing the genetic diversity, the evolution of the virus and the most important genetic changes in its genome allowing the identification of the most relevant mutations, indicates the medical biotechnology laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Rabat, in a press release.
According to the same source, the results will allow better strategies to counter the spread of the virus and improve the possibilities of managing the coronavirus pathology.
This work is part of the Genoma project of the MedBiotech laboratory. The objective is to create a national platform for analyzing the sequences of all Moroccan genomes, such as the Moroccan human reference genome and the genomes of bacteria and viruses from Moroccan samples available nationally or in international databases, concludes the press release.
