Mohamed El Morabity won the 37th edition of the Marathon des Sables on Friday. The fifth stage of the race, connecting Jdaid to Korsi Dyal Zayed over a distance of 42.2 km, saw the runner cover the distance in 3 hours 18 minutes and 34 seconds.
El Morabity was closely followed by Aziz Yachou, who finished the race in 3 hours 23 minutes and 37 seconds, while Frenchman Vasilii Korytkin took third place with a time of 3 hours 35 minutes and 55 seconds.
In an interview with MAP, Mohamed El Morabity expressed his joy at winning his first title at the Marathon des Sables, stressing the strong competition and the high temperature that made the race difficult for all the competitors. Aziz Yachou, for his part, said he was satisfied with his second place in the overall standings, stating that the essential thing is that the title remains in Morocco.
On the women’s side, Maryline Nakache won the victory by winning the fifth stage in 4 hours 18 minutes and 4 seconds. She was closely followed by Japanese Tomomi Bitoh, who finished the race in 4 hours 33 minutes and 37 seconds, while Moroccan Aziza El Amrany finished third with a time of 4 hours 36 minutes and 33 seconds.
This year, the Marathon des Sables attracted 1085 athletes from 54 different countries. The sixth and final stage, although not timed, is mandatory.
