Moroccan Runner El Aaraby Claims Second Place in New York City Marathon

For the first time since 2009, a Moroccan has stepped onto the podium of the New York marathon. And it was Mohamed El Aaraby who achieved the feat this Sunday.
Achieving a personal best in 2 hours 9 minutes 06 seconds, the Moroccan finished second behind Kenyan Albert Korir, who completed the course in 2 hours 8 minutes 22 seconds for his first major competition.
In the Women’s event, Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir, Olympic champion in Tokyo three months earlier, broke away in the final meters to win the New York marathon in 2 hours 22 minutes 39 seconds.
For this 50th edition, some 33,000 athletes answered the call of the organizers, after a postponement due to the Covid-19 crisis. Representing more than 100 countries, the runners covered 42 kilometers, crossing the five boroughs of the American metropolis, namely Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Manhattan.
