Moroccan Rights Group Challenges TV Coverage of Controversial Enrico Macias Concert

Wednesday 27 February 2019, by Amine

The concert given by Enrico Macias in Casablanca on February 14 is making headlines again. This time, the Moroccan Association for Human Rights has written an open letter to the High Authority for Audiovisual Communication about the "unbalanced media coverage" by 2M of Enrico Macias’ concert during the midday news.

According to the AMDH letter: "Emphasis was placed on the fact that the event was not impacted by the calls for a boycott, given Enrico Macias’ positions favorable to the Zionist entity, the Israeli army and its border guards, known for their crimes against the Palestinian people."

The event was also interpreted by several parties as a way to whitewash Israel of its crimes against the Palestinians, with the singer Enrico Macias being considered by some pro-Palestinians as a Zionist. There were demonstrations condemning this concert at the very moment it was taking place.

The AMDH, still in its open letter, expresses a particular position containing accusations: "What is more surprising is the implicit attempt to counter the calls for a boycott by highlighting the importance of distinguishing what Enrico Macias does as an artist from his political positions." The organization also talks about "coverage that rationalizes normalization with the Zionist entity."

Finally, the association notes the absence, during 2M’s coverage of the event, of "voices defending the boycott," voices allowing to express themselves on the reasons for the call for a boycott.

In short, an accusation of media injustice and taking a position that does not take into account all the elements. For the AMDH, its call for a boycott was legitimate according to standards that should have been taken into account by 2M since Morocco also defends Palestine. Its voice should, according to the NGO, have been heard, and not just that of Enrico Macias.
