Moroccan Raspberry Production Surges, Outpacing Spanish Growers

Spanish raspberries are increasingly suffering from Moroccan competition. The area planted for the 2021 harvest is down, while that of Morocco is increasing exponentially.
For the 2021 berry campaign, the area dedicated to raspberries in Spain has, once again, decreased due to a shift in production to the Kingdom and, to a lesser extent, to Portugal. The figures speak of an 8% drop, which largely benefits the Gharb and Moulay Bousselham region, reports Challenge.
The Spanish growers who are rushing to relocate part of their production are to blame, the magazine reports, citing as an example the company Plus Berries, which has set up in Morocco four years ago with a small 30-hectare plantation. Today, it has about 60 hectares in its country of origin, for 140 hectares in Morocco.
