Moroccan Rapper Sparks Controversy with Planned ’Divorce Concert’ in Tangier

Moroccan rapper Otmane Aatiq, alias Mister Crazy, continues to make headlines with his "divorce concert" project in Tangier. Announced for next month, this strange initiative is dividing public opinion.
While some welcome the originality of this idea, others consider it inappropriate. The principle? A paid event (250 dirhams per ticket!) where the romantic breakup would be celebrated in music. A formula that looks like a new marketing strategy, with some seeing a cynical exploitation of a personal situation to create buzz.
To justify himself, the artist says he is drawing on a Moroccan custom: "In the Moroccan desert, we celebrate both marriages and divorces," he posted on Instagram. Mister Crazy’s concept goes much further, fitting into a broader trend observed in several Arab countries.
However, this trend is far from unanimous. For many observers, celebrating a divorce is at odds with the traditions and family values of Arab societies. "Expressing joy on the occasion of a separation is to trivialize a painful event," say some experts.
Others nuance this point of view. For them, this type of initiative can also express a form of relief or victory after a difficult ordeal. Since divorce is often experienced as a personal failure, the fact of celebrating it can be perceived as a way to turn the page and take control of one’s life again.
