Moroccan Province Recruits Foreign Doctors to Address Healthcare Shortage

The Provincial Council of Driouch has taken a rather unusual initiative to address the shortage of doctors in the province. On Monday, it gave the green light to the arrival of 15 new practitioners, including foreigners, in local health centers.

Among these doctors are a Tunisian and two Guinean-Bissau nationals, all graduates of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Oujda. They will be added to the doctors from the provinces of Nador and Driouch.

This is a first for the province of Driouch, which has suffered from a shortage of doctors for years. This initiative aims to fill this gap and relieve the pressure on the provincial hospital, which is often overloaded.

Mustapha Benchaib, President of the Provincial Council, stressed that the new doctors will be present in the health centers throughout the week. They will thus offer proximity services to citizens, avoiding long and painful trips to the provincial hospital.

Last December, during an intervention in the House of Representatives, the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Khaled Ait Taleb, had announced the publication of the implementing texts for the law on the health function.

This measure aims to encourage the arrival of foreign medical professionals and thus improve human resources in the health sector in Morocco. This initiative comes, he said, in a context of international competition to attract medical skills, thus recognizing the global need to strengthen personnel in this crucial field.
