A Moroccan professor abandons his children in Spain for their "future

A Moroccan university professor was arrested in Spain. He had deliberately abandoned his two minor children so that the state could take custody of them, hoping to thus offer them better future opportunities on the other side of the Mediterranean.

This case, revealed by the Spanish media El Debate, illustrates a new trend identified by the police. This family father, a biology teacher in Morocco, accompanied his sons to Bilbao. He then left them to declare themselves as unaccompanied minors, before quietly returning to his country.

During their hearing, the two brothers explained that they were not fleeing any financial precariousness. They were entirely dependent on their father’s comfortable income. The latter simply believed that public support in Spain would open more doors for their future.

After an initial placement in Biscay, the young people joined reception centers in San Sebastian. In parallel, the investigators eventually spotted the father’s return to Spanish territory, in the Algeciras area. Summoned to the police station on March 12, he was arrested for abandoning minors.
