Moroccan Produce Gains Ground in European Supermarkets, Challenging Spanish Farmers

Moroccan fruits and vegetables, especially tomatoes, are direct competitors of Spanish products on European markets.
Morocco has become a global agricultural power and exports vegetables such as tomatoes, olives, argan oil and citrus fruits around the world, from the United States to Russia, including, of course, Spain. Taking advantage of its geographical proximity to Europe, its agreements with the EU and its cheap labor, Morocco has invaded the European market with its products that are highly sought after in the continent’s supermarkets.
Spanish producers have constantly denounced a "fierce and unfair competition" from Morocco that threatens Spanish and community production. In 2022, Moroccan exports of food and maritime products increased by 20% compared to the previous year. Morocco is the world’s leading exporter of argan oil, the third largest exporter of table olives and citrus fruits, and the fourth largest exporter of tomatoes.
