Moroccan Private Clinics Face Backlash Over Soaring COVID-19 Treatment Costs

Faced with the saturation of public hospitals, Covid-19 patients are turning to private clinics in Casablanca and Rabat. Patients or relatives of hospitalized victims have found themselves with very heavy bills.
Medical costs related to the care of Covid-19 patients have been multiplied by 5. A night at the clinic is now billed at 15,000 dirhams instead of 3,000 dirhams 3 months earlier, not to mention the usual ancillary fees.
This mercantile and greedy attitude of the managers of private clinics in the two main Moroccan cities has provoked a wave of indignation among families, who are questioning the role of the State in the supervision of these hospital structures and the regulation of public rates.
Discouraged by these exorbitant rates, many patients resign themselves to outpatient or traditional treatments. A behavior that increases the risk of large-scale virus transmission.
