Moroccan Parties to Submit Proposal on Diaspora Voting Rights to King Mohammed VI

The political parties (PI, MP, PPS, USFP, PAM, RNI, UC and PJD) representing Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) have set up a coordination to work for the right to vote and the representation of Moroccans of the world in Parliament. A memorandum will be submitted to King Mohammed VI on Tuesday, January 12, 2021.

In a statement, the parties representing the MREs say they have organized several meetings to discuss the issues and expectations regarding the effectiveness of the Moroccan diaspora’s right to participation and representation in the Parliament of Moroccans of the world. "The discussions were marked by an in-depth dialogue, in which the party coordinators invoked the royal directives relating to Moroccan citizens residing abroad (royal letters of November 6, 2005, November 6, 2007 and July 30, 2015)," it is specified.

The chapters on Moroccans in the world and immigration in the 2011 constitution (articles 16, 17, 18, 30, 163), in which members of Moroccan parties abroad actively participated in the development of the voting process in their favor in many countries of the diaspora, were also the subject of discussions. Not to mention the current situation at the national and international level, and the expectations of Moroccans around the world and their role in contributing to the crystallization of the demands of the new development model.

At the end of the proceedings, the parties have taken some resolutions. These include taking initiatives to defend the right to institutional participation of Moroccans around the world and to activate the demands of the constitution and ensure equity by allowing them to make their voices heard, express their situation and contribute to defending the interests of the homeland and citizens wherever they are in the world.

They agreed to set a date until January 12, 2021 to hold meetings with the general secretaries of the parties, as well as with group presidents in the House of Representatives and the House of Advisors. A meeting is therefore planned with the Secretary General of the Community Council, as well as with the President of the National Human Rights Council. A meeting will also be held with the President of the House of Representatives, another with the President of the House of Advisors. The parties representing the MREs also intend to meet with the Minister of the Interior and the Prime Minister.

Finally, they have decided to hold a press conference on January 12, 2021, in order to enlighten the Moroccan public opinion, and particularly the Moroccan community abroad, on the results of these meetings, and to submit a memorandum to King Mohammed VI.
