Moroccan Parents Shift to Public Schools Amid Private Tuition Controversy

Deserting the private sector and rehabilitating the public school. This is the objective of the campaign launched by parents of students, fed up with the pressure of certain private institutions that insist on the payment of tuition fees, despite the health crisis of the coronavirus.

By launching this campaign on social networks and instant messaging applications, parents and guardians of students intend to protest against the policy of certain private educational institutions which, without taking into account the effects of the health crisis on the standard of living of families, continue to demand the payment of the full tuition fees.

The objective is to encourage parents to abandon private schools in favor of public schools. In this perspective, parents’ associations plan to strengthen the capacities of public schools in terms of infrastructure and to support certain expenses related to the supply of hygiene products, transportation costs and caretaking services, in order to contribute to the improvement of the framework and working conditions of children within these structures. For the development of the latter, they also propose to finance the teaching of subjects such as music and theater.

The campaign launched by the parents of students is already the subject of a complaint filed by a private school group. The latter accuses parents of having fraudulently obtained the contact details of certain families, which they would then have contacted in order to convince them to enroll their children in public school.

With this new situation, it goes without saying that the relations between the parents of students and certain private educational institutions are going from bad to worse, notwithstanding the mediation of the Ministry of National Education.
