Moroccan Opposition Slams Government's Reversal on Alcohol Tax Hike

The General Secretariat of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) has attacked the government of Aziz Akhannouch following its retreat on the increase in the domestic consumption tax applied to alcoholic beverages.

The PJD criticized in a statement issued after its meeting what it described as "the strange justification adopted by the government for this retreat," considering that this tax has seen successive increases over the past ten years, which has had a negative impact on the finances of companies operating in this sector.

For the PJD, "the consumption of these prohibited beverages, with serious and destructive social and health effects, has decreased during their time in government following the continuous increase in taxes in the various finance laws."

The party also criticized "the reduction by the government of customs duties on imports of certain products that compete with the national industry, contrary to the commitments of the government program."

For the PJD, the government "has continued through the 2024 finance bill and the amendments it has accepted to follow its approach based on responding to the pressures of certain categories to the detriment of the national interest, the national economy, the national product and capital, and to marginalize responsible political debate and the political approach aimed at equity and taking into account the higher interest of the Nation."
