Moroccan Opposition to Israel Ties Remains Strong One Year After Normalization

A year later, opposition to the normalization of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel has not waned. The protest is still massive in the country.

On the web, many Moroccans continue to express their anger at the Moroccan-Israeli rapprochement. "Today, tomorrow... and always: Moroccans, and in all the languages of the world, say: down with normalization. All honorable people are requested to support this blessed popular campaign #FreePalestine," tweeted Driss Bougrin Amrani on December 22, 2021.

Civil society activists continue to mobilize online to reiterate their rejection of normalization with Israel. They support Palestine and call for an end to the occupation of its territories by Israel using the hashtags: "Down with normalization" and "normalization is a betrayal". An anti-normalization demonstration was also organized in Meknes on the occasion of the first anniversary of the joint agreement between Israel and Morocco on December 22, 2020.

For their part, Morocco, Israel and the United States soberly celebrated, in a videoconference meeting last Wednesday, the first anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between the kingdom and the Hebrew state. All hailed "a positive step" towards peace in the region.
