Moroccan Olive Oil Prices Remain High Despite End of Harvest Season

While Moroccans were expecting a drop in olive oil prices after the end of the harvest and pressing phases, nothing has apparently changed for them.
Exorbitant prices continue until 2025. According to a Hespress team that visited some supermarkets in the city of Salé, some well-known brands sell a liter of olive oil for 91.90 dirhams, while others set the price at 93.90 dirhams or even 93.50 dirhams. As for the price of a half-liter, it is around 47 dirhams. The team also found that the prices of certain varieties produced specifically exceed these prices. "Olive oil currently costs between 90 and 95 dirhams per liter, while it was sold between 85 and 90 dirhams before the start of the pressing season," confirmed a local merchant in Rabat.

A merchant from Salé adds: "Olive oil prices in Morocco are now stable, ranging between 90 and 95 dirhams, while they reached the threshold of 98 dirhams a few weeks ago, which shows that we are facing price stability, despite the difficulties of talking about future declines." However, he brings an important nuance. "The oil marketed by food companies is slightly cheaper than that sold specifically or randomly, if we can say so, because it exceeds the threshold of 100 dirhams," explained the merchant, specifying that "each type of oil has its consumers and its customers."
Why do olive oil prices continue to soar after the end of the harvest and pressing phases? "The quantities put on the market for the first time in recent weeks have not been enough to positively influence prices," he explained.
To solve this situation, the government intends to import olive oil produced in several countries, including Spain, Tunisia, Italy and France. 52 companies are involved.
