Moroccan Olive Oil Prices Expected to Drop, Industry Expert Says

A professional has denied reports that olive oil prices on Moroccan markets have reached 140 or 150 dirhams. He also assured that prices will soon drop.
Good news for olive oil consumers. In a statement to the website Kech24, a professional denied that the price of a liter of olive oil had reached 140 or 150 dirhams. According to his explanations, the purchase price of olives per kilogram varies between 12 and 15 dirhams. To support his statements, he affirmed that he had visited several mills and noticed that they were selling the liter of olive oil at prices ranging from 110 to 120 dirhams.
According to the professional, it is not excluded that the price of a liter may decrease. There is still enough time for the mills that have not yet opened their doors to do so, he said. However, some mills may not open this year due to the low olive harvest. Another cause: the equipment and cleaning of the mills entail high costs.
While he admits that the government’s efforts to import olive oil from Spain and Tunisia could help alleviate the pressure, he still believes that Moroccan oil remains exceptional due to its high quality and distinctive flavor. The professional also denied allegations of withholding last season’s olive oil. He denied any form of monopoly. The professional explained that "the olive harvest was low and last year’s oil had completely sold out in Morocco, especially the authentic, unadulterated oil."
