Moroccan Official’s Son Jailed for Drunk Driving and Assaulting Police Officer

The court of first instance in Fès sentenced, this Wednesday, December 22, 2021, Naoufal Chabat, commune president, also the eldest son of Hamid Chabat, former secretary general of the Istiqlal party, to two months in prison. He was prosecuted in custody for "driving under the influence, refusing to comply, attempted flight and insulting public officials in the exercise of their duties".
In addition to the prison sentence, Naoufal Chabat was fined 3,000 DH. He must also pay 5,000 DH in damages to the traffic officer against whom he was guilty of insult, reports Alyaoum24. The eldest son of the former secretary general of the Istiqlal Party (PI) and current president of the commune of Brarha in the province of Taza had been arrested on November 29, 2021 after an incident with a traffic officer.
Accused of "insulting a public official in the exercise of his duties, public drunkenness and driving under the influence," this law graduate had been placed in pre-trial detention on December 1 at the local Bourkaiz prison, by the prosecutor of the king near the court of first instance of Fès.
In 2019, the Court of Cassation in Rabat had acquitted Naoufal Chabat of the charge of "electoral fraud", after his conviction at first instance to eight months in prison with a suspended sentence.
