Moroccan Nightclub’s Anti-Gay Event Sparks Outrage in Spanish Resort Town

The Fatima Ino club, a Moroccan discotheque, plans to organize an event on January 18 in Torremolinos from which it has expressly excluded homosexuals. A discrimination that has sparked a heated controversy in the city.
It was the mayor of Torremolinos, Margarita del Cid, who published on Thursday on her social networks a screenshot of the regulations of the Fatima Ino club for the event, reports El Pais. "No fights, drugs, caps, flip-flops... and p*," can be read on the poster. It is also indicated that any "irresponsible or aggressive behavior" will result in immediate expulsion. "Hate and homophobia have no place here and we will do everything in our power to ban this event and any club activity that promotes this regrettable attitude," the city’s mayor reacted.
After her post on Instagram, Margarita del Cid would have received several private messages of a racist nature from the club, according to municipal sources. "The legal services of the town hall and the LGBTI groups are informed and are working to put an end to this situation," said the mayor of Torremolinos, who announced that she will file a complaint, in a personal capacity and on behalf of the municipality, "for defamation and hate crime" against the organizers of the event before the national police station of Torremolinos and Benalmádena.
Torremolinos is one of the cities that are part of the Spanish Network of Destinations for Diversity and one of the favorites of the LGBTIQ+ collective for decades. The city hosts many celebrations such as Pride, which brings together more than 30,000 people each June, as well as many other events and festivals throughout the summer. In addition, the Begoña passage - which suffered a historic raid in 1971 - has been declared by the Congress of Deputies as a place of historical memory and a cradle of LGBTI rights.
