Moroccan national team: an Argentine coach was rejected at the last minute
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has rejected the recruitment of Jorge Sampaoli to succeed Walid Regragui. The organization has finally favored Mohamed Ouahbi in order to maintain national leadership before the 2026 World Cup, despite advanced discussions with the Argentine.
While the arrival of the former Sevilla FC coach was practically finalized, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has ultimately vetoed his recruitment. Jorge Sampaoli, who has already coached Argentina at the 2018 World Cup, has since joined Flamengo in Brazil, stating that the Carioca club was his absolute priority.
The federation’s choice has fallen on Mohamed Ouahbi, crowned world champion with the under-20s at the tournament in Chile. This change confirms the desire to maintain the sports project under a "Moroccan leadership", thus turning the page on the Regragui era after the continental final lost against Senegal.
For the cycle leading to the 2030 World Cup, the organization remains open to renowned international profiles. While Xavi Hernández is cited among the appreciated options, the project to install Andrés Iniesta as sporting director has failed, with negotiations between the two parties having been officially broken off a few weeks ago.
This restructuring comes less than a hundred days before the 2026 World Cup, organized in North America. The national team is seeking to stabilize its technical staff while preparing for the 2030 deadline, which the Kingdom will co-host with Spain and Portugal.
