Moroccan Names ’Mohamed’ and ’Fatima’ Top List in Catalonia, Spain
Mohamed (masculine) and Fatima (feminine) are the most given names of Moroccan origin in Catalonia, according to 2024 data from Idescat.
In Catalonia, 14,759 people of Moroccan origin and more than 40,000 people throughout the autonomous community bear the name Mohamed, making it one of the most common male names in Spain. In second place is Marco, a very common name in the Italian community living in Catalonia, with 781 people bearing this name. Andrés Felipe, a common name among Colombians in Catalonia, comes in third place, with 642 people, reports La Razon.
Regarding female names, Fatima comes first, with 5,794 people of Moroccan origin bearing this name, which is one of the most traditional and popular in the Moroccan community of Catalonia. Valentina is the second most given name within the foreign community of Catalonia. In total, 486 Colombian women and more than 6,000 women bear this name in Catalonia. In third place is the name Maria, with 1,194 women from Romania bearing this name.
These foreign names are not only a sign of the ethnic and cultural diversity of Catalonia, but also of the integration of the Moroccan, Colombian and Italian communities into Catalan society.
