Moroccan Motorways: a new project is not well received

Anouar Benazzouz, CEO of the National Motorway Company of Morocco, announced the launch of a project to reforest the edges of Moroccan motorways.
The objective is to plant tens of thousands of trees to beautify the road landscapes. This project is carried out in collaboration with foreign and Moroccan partners, including German institutions specializing in the environment.
However, several gray areas remain. The financial cost of the project has not been disclosed, nor have the names of the companies that will be in charge of it. In addition, the choice of trees has not yet been communicated. This lack of transparency is generating criticism, especially since the company is already being criticized for the deterioration of many roads in the country.
Finally, some observers are concerned about the environmental implications of the project. The planting of trees not adapted to the local climate could indeed prove to be harmful, due to their high water consumption and their impact on air quality.
