“I can’t even afford to pay for my son’s haircut.” Amina, a pseudonym, can no longer hold back her tears. This Moroccan mother, who lives near Montebelluna in northern Italy, tells daily newspaper Il Gazzettino how her husband allegedly arranged to leave for Morocco, leaving her with no means. In a matter of weeks, the 52-year-old homemaker is said to have lost her savings, her home and her husband.

The family settled in the Treviso area 24 years ago. The first two children, now 29 and 25, were born in Morocco. The two younger children, an 18-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, grew up in Italy. All of them went to school there. For Amina, who has spent most of her adult life in the country, leaving is out of the question.

According to her account, everything changed when the company that employed her husband closed down. After receiving severance pay and unemployment benefits, he allegedly decided to return to Morocco for good. Before leaving, he is said to have sold the family home and withdrawn all the savings held in their joint bank account.

“He told me Islamic law allowed him to do it”

But what remains most painful for Amina is the reason her husband gave for leaving. He allegedly told her he intended to marry a second woman in Morocco, citing religion. “He wanted me to go to Morocco with him, even if that meant leaving my children here,” she told the Italian newspaper. The man allegedly explained that Islamic law allowed him to have several wives.

The woman, who is in her 50s, refused to go with him. She says she does not want to abandon her children or leave a country where they grew up. Two of them are still in school, while the older ones now live elsewhere. The 29-year-old son returned to the family after learning that his father had left and the family savings had disappeared.

In response, the children decided to contact the carabinieri and consult a lawyer specializing in international law. They intend to have their father’s responsibilities examined, particularly his financial obligations to the family. The Italian newspaper also reports suspicions that he abused the children before leaving, which the authorities will need to investigate.

The family now fears losing their home for good. Although the house is said to have already been sold, its occupants have not yet been forced to leave. Asked by Il Gazzettino, the town’s mayor said he had not been informed of the situation. He plans to contact social services to look into the difficulties facing Amina and her children.

As for the husband, he allegedly first claimed to have found a room nearby before disappearing. According to the newspaper, he has already returned to Morocco. Amina and her children are now waiting to find out what legal options they have to keep their home and recover the resources they need for daily life.
