Moroccan Migrants Attempt Reverse Crossing from Spain to Morocco amid Pandemic

The Spanish police have announced that they have thwarted the escape of 14 Moroccan citizens from the city of Ceuta to the Moroccan coast, since the start of the coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic and the implementation of the state of health emergency in Spain on March 13.

According to the "Europa Press" agency, these 14 individuals were surprised on the "Tarajal" beach from where they wanted to reach the Moroccan territory by swimming. In addition to this group, three other Moroccans were also trying to return to Morocco through the "Bahia" coastal strip, which can be crossed on foot during low tide.

In total, 12 Moroccan illegal immigrants have managed to reach Morocco since last March, using the routes frequently used in the opposite direction by illegal immigrants to reach the city.

According to the same media, Moroccans dominate the 160 people arrested for violating the state of health emergency measures. They were placed in a local sports center. Among them, 60 cross-border workers who remained blocked after the borders were closed, as well as 100 teenagers who lived on the street, in the port area, waiting for the opportunity to reach the Spanish side.

Furthermore, 24 people from this group were allowed to join a chalet that a volunteer made available to the Moroccans stranded on Spanish soil. 15 other people were admitted to the Al Oumma mosque. As for the Moroccans still stranded in the two cities of Ceuta and Melilla, procedures are underway for their repatriation under the best conditions, it is recalled. The same applies to the remaining 22,000 compatriots, still stranded all over the world.
