Moroccan Merchants Repackage Algerian Dates to Sidestep Ramadan Boycott

In Morocco, merchants have found a trick to bypass the boycott of Algerian dates which, according to some Internet users, would be "adulterated and toxic" because they come "from the oases where the French army had carried out nuclear tests".
According to an authorized source, the boycott of Algerian dates is well followed in the souks of most Moroccan cities. Aware of this, brokers and food professionals have found a trick to circumvent this boycott campaign launched on social networks a few days before the start of the month of Ramadan. They proceed to repackage tons of Algerian dates in clandestine warehouses located in the peripheral areas, reports the Arabic-language daily Assabah. Repackaged in packets without specification of their origin, several brands of Algerian dates are resold on the domestic markets, it is also reported.
Other fraudsters have opted for the repackaging of these dates in packets stamped with Tunisian or Moroccan origin and the reduction of their price in order to attract consumers. To easily sell the product, large importers have also launched an advertising campaign on social networks. They categorically refute the reports indicating that Algerian dates contain carcinogenic chemicals.
