Moroccan Math Olympiad Team Denied UK Visas, Missing International Competition
While they had validated their ticket, Moroccan students were unable to participate in the 65th edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad held in Bath, United Kingdom, from July 11 to 22, due to a lack of visa. Concerned, parliamentarian Khalid Sati of the National Union of Labor is questioning the Minister of National Education, Preschool and Sports, Chakib Benmoussa.
In a written question, Khalid Sati asked Chakib Benmoussa about the reasons that prevented the participation of the Moroccan delegation in the 2024 Mathematics Olympiad. While the Moroccan students had been selected to be part of the Moroccan national team to participate in the Olympiad, had submitted their passports as well as those of their chaperones to obtain a travel visa, had participated in the training camp organized for them in Benguérir before the scheduled date of their departure, set for July 14, 2024, from Casablanca to London, they were surprised to be prevented from participating in this major scientific event for reasons beyond their control, and this, only one day before the start of the competitions, the elected official said.
Sati was keen to recall that Morocco ranked 68th out of 112 participating countries in the 2023 Tokyo edition, thus gaining two points compared to the 2022 Norway edition. The elected official also questioned the Minister of National Education, Preschool and Sports about the measures and provisions envisaged to improve and raise the quality of supervision and scientific and preliminary preparation for such events, according to a strategic and prospective vision.
