Moroccan Man Rescued After 36 Hours Adrift in Mediterranean Crossing Attempt

Mohamed Ouskir, 26, was luckier than his compatriot Badr. He was rescued by a fishing boat and transferred to the Mdiq hospital. Both were reported missing at sea while trying to swim to Spain from Ceuta. Their families were desperately searching for them.
Mohamed recounts that he tried several times to reach the coast, but never succeeded. "I was swept away by the sea until a fishing boat found and rescued me," he told El Faro de Ceuta.
The young man will have spent 36 hours at sea before being fished out and transferred to the Mdiq hospital, before being reunited safe and sound with his loved ones. Badr El Moutaouakil’s family, another young Moroccan also reported missing at sea, rushed to the hospital upon hearing the news to check if it was their son who had been rescued. Unfortunately, Badr is still missing.
Mohamed is from Fnideq. Like him, many young Moroccans, candidates for illegal immigration, have disappeared at sea. Their stories may not have the same happy ending as Mohamed’s.
