Moroccan Man Jailed for Attacking Firefighters, Arson in Eastern France

A 38-year-old Moroccan was sentenced to eight months in prison for throwing tiles at firefighters and setting fire to his apartment in Audincourt (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region).
The events took place last June on Rue de Seloncourt in Audincourt. On June 9, the Moroccan expatriate climbed onto the roof and started throwing pieces of wood and tiles, reports L’Est Républicain. Informed, the firefighters arrive on the scene. When he sees them, he starts throwing tiles at them. "According to my calculations, he threw about 200 tiles," says the public prosecutor’s representative. The controls of the cherry picker were also damaged. The police climb the stairs and finally manage to recover the desperate man by "making him fall heavily into his home," the president specifies. After being taken into custody, he was released on the morning of June 11.
In the evening, he commits another act. This time, he set fire to his sofa. Several material damages were recorded. Called, the firefighters and police went to his apartment. They arrest him, take him into custody and then imprison him. At the bar on Tuesday, the defendant cites an alcoholism rooted since the age of 18, a former heroin addiction to justify his actions. Not enough to convince the president. "As long as you haven’t identified the root of the evil that is eating you, you will relapse. The same causes produce the same effects," he insists.
The psychiatric expert concludes that there is a risk of recurrence. Based on this conclusion, the public prosecutor’s representative requests 8 months of imprisonment and socio-judicial supervision. The court follows the public prosecutor’s requisition and sentences the defendant.
