Moroccan Man Faces Terrorism Probe in Fatal Attack on French Tourist in Tiznit

A 31-year-old Moroccan is accused of having killed on Saturday a French woman in the city of Tiznit and injured a Belgian woman in his flight towards Agadir. He is the subject of a terrorism investigation.
The alleged perpetrator of the double assault has no criminal record, even though he spent a month in a psychiatric center, an official source told EFE. The young man fatally assaulted the 79-year-old French citizen with an ax in a commercial area of the city of Tiznit, before injuring another Belgian citizen, as he fled towards Agadir.

The public prosecutor’s office in charge of the fight against terrorism has opened an investigation to shed light on the case and determine the reasons that motivated the alleged perpetrator to commit this murder or whether he has links with terrorist organizations.

The last deadly attack against foreigners in Morocco dates back to late 2018, when two Scandinavian tourists, Louisa Vesterager Jespersen, 24, and Maren Ueland, 28, were killed in Sidi Youssef Ben Ali, Marrakech. The attack had been claimed by the Islamic State group. The three perpetrators of the murders had been sentenced to death, as well as twenty other people who had received various prison sentences.
