Moroccan Lawmaker’s Prison Sentence Extended to 8 Years in Corruption Case

It’s getting more complicated for deputy Rachid El Fayek, who has just seen his sentence increased by the Fez Court of Appeal in the case of corruption and falsification of official documents.
The court specialized in financial crimes has decided to increase the sentences imposed on Rachid El Fayek, deputy of Fès Sud and former president of the commune of Oulad Tayeb, from 6 to 8 years.
The Chamber also aggravated the sanctions relating to cases of corruption in the field of urban planning of the same commune. Jaouad El Fayek, the deputy’s brother and former president of the Fez Prefecture Council, sees his sentence increased by one year, going to 4 years in prison. The sentence of his personal secretary, on the other hand, goes from 18 months to 2 years in prison.
The sentences handed down at first instance to the other defendants in this case have been confirmed by the courts. They range from one year in prison to suspended sentences. The fines, affecting 16 convicted individuals, have also been maintained, with amounts ranging from 1.5 million dirhams for the main defendant, to 1,500 dirhams for one of his accomplices.
