Moroccan Lawmaker Jailed in International Cocaine Trafficking Probe

A member of parliament, who is also the president of a chamber of commerce and industry, was arrested and then incarcerated as part of an investigation by the National Brigade of the Judicial Police (BNPJ) into an international drug trafficking network.
The arrest of the elected official comes as part of an investigation initiated by the BNPJ following the arrest of a man suspected of being the coordinator of a drug trafficking network. During a search of the latter’s home, the investigators had seized a large quantity of cocaine. A second individual, a former MP and former member of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) and a third person suspected of having participated in drug trafficking operations from the port of Tangier, and from beaches on the Atlantic coast, between Sidi Rahal and El Jadida, were also incarcerated, reports the Arabic daily Assabah.
After the arrest of the elected official, who is also the president of a chamber of commerce and industry dismissed by decision of the administrative court, the BNPJ services are continuing their investigations. The accused would be behind an international drug trafficking operation carried out in early 2022, with the complicity of four businessmen. The investigators had come across 10 tons of drugs hidden in a shipment of goods containing mainly soap.
