Moroccan Lawmaker Arrested in Marrakech Corruption Sting Operation

Moulay Abderrahim El Kamil, a parliamentarian but also the president of a commune in the suburbs of Marrakech, was caught red-handed, following a trap set by the security services of the city.
Accused of blackmail by a Moroccan businessman residing abroad, the deputy is suspected of having demanded a bribe of 110,000 dirhams from the latter, in exchange for an administrative service.
On the orders of the Attorney General’s Office, elements of the National Brigade of the Judicial Police opened an investigation following the complaint filed by the Moroccan expatriate. A plan, developed with the complicity of the latter, made it possible to arrest the commune president in the act of corruption.
A similar case had occurred at the Wilaya of Marrakech, last December, when an official within the Division of Economic and Social Affairs had been caught in the act of corruption. He had demanded the sum of 120,000 dirhams from a tourism promoter.
