Moroccan Judges Suspended for Releasing Embezzlement Suspect on Bail

The Supreme Council of the Judiciary has suspended three judges from the Casablanca Court of Appeal who were the subject of two judicial and administrative investigations. The judges are said to have released on bail an individual convicted of embezzling the sum of 250 million dirhams.
The control mission, commissioned by the Council to investigate the case, had identified a number of procedural flaws, the seriousness of which led to the hearing of the three defendants. The latter are said to have each benefited from lots within the "Atlantic Beach" association, of which the main accused is the president, reports Akhbarona.
The case came to light in December when the defendant had been released on bail after paying a bond of 100,000 dirhams. The individual had been placed under judicial supervision with withdrawal of his passport and a ban on leaving the national territory.
The decision had provoked the anger of several dozen members of the association, victims of fraud. Nearly 250 million dirhams were extorted from the victims, who had put all their savings into acquiring real estate in Morocco.
