Moroccan Jewish Community Revives Historic Pilgrimage in Meknes After 60 Years

For the first time in 60 years, members of the Moroccan Jewish community celebrated, on Wednesday, at the historic Jewish cemetery of Meknes, the Hilloula of the Tsadikim.

The event is unprecedented and brought together members of the Jewish community of Morocco and several foreign countries, particularly France, Belgium, Canada and Israel. In a statement to M24, the Secretary General of the Council of Israeli Communities in Morocco, Serge Berdugo, expressed "his great emotion" to attend this Hilloula, the first in 60 years in Meknes.

The Great Hilloula of the Tsadikim of Meknes, initiated by the Council of Israeli Communities of Morocco, comes after the rehabilitation of the Jewish cemetery, which is actually unique in the world, according to Serge Berdugo, who points out that it is "an initiative that came after the decision of King Mohammed VI, relating to the rehabilitation of Jewish cemeteries in Morocco, adding that the royal initiative has allowed the preservation of more than 170 necropolises, which have regained their dignity, to the satisfaction of the families of the deceased".

Taking advantage of this celebration, the members of the Jewish community proceeded to the inauguration of the Mellah Museum, "a museum space that contains priceless documents such as the Ketouba, the marriage certificate of Rabbi Raphael Berdugo".
