Moroccan Islamist Party PJD Faces Internal Rift After Election Defeat

A few days after its debacle in the September 8 legislative elections, the Party of Justice and Development (PJD) is holding the meeting of the national council this Saturday, September 18, in a context marked by deep divisions. Two camps are clashing within the party.

The defeat in the last elections has accentuated the climate of crisis within the PJD. Founders, top leaders, young people no longer speak the same language. From now on, two camps are clashing within the party. On the one hand, the supporters of Abdelilah Benkirane. They are preparing the return of the former party leader, the first head of the PJD government. On the other hand, those who are firing on all cylinders to prevent Benkirane’s return to the head of the party. They were the first to brandish article 16 of the PJD statutes which limits the secretary general’s terms to two, reports Assabah.

They blame Benkirane for having marked the break with all the other political formations and their leaders, accusing some and defaming others while insulting the rest and doing everything to discredit the work of all. In response, the supporters of the former leader of the Islamist party accuse the detractors "of being the first to have benefited from the political rent: ministerial posts, parliamentary mandates and positions of responsibility at the local and regional level with salaries, allowances, bonuses and other material benefits".

The two camps accuse each other mutually and do not want to assume the heavy defeat of the party in the last elections. Will they succeed in evaluating the slap received on September 8 during the national council meeting to be held this Saturday?
