Morocco’s Ruling Islamist Party Suffers Major Defeat in Parliamentary Elections

Severe defeat for the Party of Justice and Development (PJD) in the elections held on Wednesday in Morocco. The Islamist party, in power for 10 years, only obtained 12 seats, compared to 125 in the last legislature.

As expected, the National Rally of Independents (RNI) won the elections by winning 97 seats after the counting of 96% of the votes, said Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit.

The Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) is in 2nd place with 82 seats, followed by the Istiqlal Party (PI, 78 seats), the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP, 35 seats), the Popular Movement (MP, 26 seats), the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS, 20 seats), the Constitutional Union (UC, 18 seats) and the Party of Justice and Development (PJD, 12 seats).

The other political formations share 12 seats, he said, adding that the national participation rate is 50.35%.
