Moroccan Inmate Walks Out of Spanish Prison Amid Security Lapse

A Moroccan escaped on Friday, July 8 from the Antoni Asunción prison in Picassent (Valencia), where he was serving a sentence for violations of health measures during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The 36-year-old inmate, who was serving a minimum sentence for several crimes of disobedience during the health crisis, escaped from the prison in complete tranquility, without even having "an escape plan". The Moroccan is said to have found the visiting room door open on his return from a meeting with a judicial officer on Friday, July 8 at 10 a.m. and blended in with the visitors to escape, according to Levante.
An investigation has been opened to determine the flaws in the security system of the penitentiary institution and to locate the responsibilities in order to prevent such errors from recurring. The inmate is said to have even had time to stop at the prison cafeteria for a drink before calmly leaving the establishment, without the agents asking him for any kind of document.
The Moroccan had been in prison for eight months and should be released soon. With this escape, he faces a sentence of six months to one year in prison for an offense of non-compliance with the sentence. According to the sources consulted, the Civil Guard only reported the escape in the late afternoon, nearly nine hours after the prisoner’s escape. The Picassent investigating court has issued a warrant for the fugitive’s search and arrest, who has no history of violent crimes.
