Moroccan Human Rights Group Alleges Banks Violate COVID-19 Debt Relief Measures

In a letter addressed to the Head of Government, the Minister of Economy and Finance, the President of the Professional Grouping of Banks of Morocco (GPBM), and the Wali of Bank Al Maghrib (BAM), the regional office of the Moroccan Association of Human Rights (AMDH) in Fès-Meknès denounces "refusals to postpone bank credit deadlines by certain agencies".
According to the association, "a large number of workers and entrepreneurs directly affected by the repercussions of the coronavirus are currently suffering due to the non-compliance by a number of banks with the measures announced by the Economic Monitoring Committee". The AMDH in Fès-Meknès bases its finding on the proactive measure of deferred debt repayment, and the testimony of certain citizens.
Faced with this situation, the regional section calls for "the need to respect the application of the law and all the measures enacted by the competent Committee". It also requests that necessary measures be taken to "immediately prevent banking institutions from forcing customers to sign pre-prepared forms for this purpose", and to "respect the will of their customers".
The AMDH also requests that "the cancellation of all forced demands from offending banking institutions and those under its jurisdiction be considered".
