Moroccan Household Income Gap: Urban Families Earn 27% More Than Rural Counterparts

In 2019, the annual remuneration of each household in Morocco was 91,933 dirhams, or 7,661 dirhams per month. This income differs from an urban household to a rural household.

In urban areas, the annual remuneration per household is 98,483 DH, or 8,207 DH/month, compared to 77,600 DH per year in rural areas, or 6,467 DH/month, according to a note from the High Commission for Planning (HCP), entitled "Household Incomes: Levels, Sources and Social Distribution". This direct survey of households, carried out on the model of the Italian National Institute of Statistics, indicates that for Moroccan households in general, the global income is around 767,142 million dirhams per year. As for the total income of urban households, it is 2.8 times higher than that of rural households, i.e. respectively, 564,024 million dirhams in urban areas and 203,118 million dirhams in rural areas, the HCP specified.

Furthermore, at the national level, 50% of households have an average monthly income of more than 5,133 DH. In urban areas, the average monthly salary of 50% of households is more than 5,609 DH, for 50% of households in rural areas. Still at the national level, the average annual income per person is 21,515 DH, or 1,793 DH/month. This average annual income is 24,992 DH in urban areas, equivalent to 2,083 DH per month and 15,560 DH in rural areas, or 1,297 DH per month.

It should be noted that this study, the first of its kind conducted by the HCP, was carried out throughout the Moroccan territory and among the social strata, from December 1, 2019 to the end of March 2020, with 3,290 households, who were not confronted with the impacts of the health crisis.
