Moroccan Health Experts Warn Against Herbal Remedies for COVID-19

The Moroccan Poison Control and Pharmacovigilance Center (CAPM) is sounding the alarm on the risks of self-medication, particularly with medicinal plants, in the treatment of coronavirus.

In a press release published on the website of the Ministry of Health, the CAPM notes that harmful health behaviors adopted by the population to treat Coronavirus are multiplying.

According to the Center, "many people are turning to medicinal plants such as the use of certain mixtures composed of certain plants (such as Artemisia herba alba, Syzygium aromaticum and Eucalyptus) which are supposed to boost immunity or prevent infection with the new Coronavirus." In reality, this approach, which proves to be ineffective, further weakens the health of the population. "The use of this type of product in self-medication can present a danger to health due to side effects or risk of poisoning, such as kidney failure, liver damage or respiratory distress, and other symptoms," continues the CAPM press release, which concludes that "any attempt to prevent or treat Covid-19 using medicinal herbs, moreover rejected by the World Health Organization, is a mistake and has serious consequences for the patient’s health."

The Moroccan Poison Control and Pharmacovigilance Center is already warning citizens "against the frequent use of herbs, even those used in culinary dishes, and recommends not to succumb to advice and prescriptions provided on the Internet to prevent or treat the coronavirus disease." Consequently, the Center calls on Moroccan families to follow the instructions of the authorities by respecting the barrier gestures, namely confinement at home given the state of health emergency, in order to avoid the transmission of the infection, and to follow the health recommendations advocated by the Ministry of Health.

In addition, an appeal is made to the population, inviting any person presenting symptoms of the disease to contact the competent authorities (Allo Epidemiological Monitoring 080 100 47 47 or Allo SAMU 141 for emergency medical assistance or Allo 300) in order to take the necessary measures and receive care in case of a positive Covid-19 test.
