Moroccan group invites German interior minister to debate remarks on migrant violence

An association of Moroccans living in Düsseldorf has decided to address German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt directly. Following his controversial remarks about perpetrators of violence from immigrant backgrounds, it is inviting him to a public meeting in March 2027 to discuss racism and social cohesion.

It all began with youth demonstrations held on October 31 in several German cities. While the gatherings were mostly peaceful, violence broke out, notably in Frankfurt. Alexander Dobrindt blamed it on violent left-wing groups and “troublemakers from the migrant milieu.” The minister stood by his remarks before the Bundestag on Wednesday, November 4.

The wording prompted widespread reaction in Germany. At a federal government press conference on November 2, Interior Ministry spokesperson Sonja Kock did not clearly define who was meant by the expression. Asked about Germans with immigrant backgrounds going back several generations, she did not clarify the limits of this category either.

Moroccans propose public debate with minister

In response to the controversy, the Düsseldorfer Marokkaner initiative has chosen to respond by inviting Alexander Dobrindt to the International Weeks Against Racism, scheduled to take place from March 5 to 21, 2027, in Düsseldorf. In a statement reported by the German outlet Fokus Afrika, the group says that those responsible for violence should be held individually accountable for their actions, without their origins being used to cast suspicion on entire communities.

The association, which estimates that around 18 000 people of Moroccan origin live in Düsseldorf, is also calling for people from immigrant backgrounds to have a greater role in local decision-making. In particular, it wants to strengthen dialogue between associations, schools, municipal authorities and political leaders.

The Weeks Against Racism will be held under the patronage of Düsseldorf Mayor Stephan Keller and Karima Benbrahim, director of the Information and Documentation Centre for Anti-Racism Work in North Rhine-Westphalia. Organizers are preparing discussions, meetings and cultural events. The invitation to the minister could be part of the programme, but Alexander Dobrindt has yet to respond.
