Moroccan Gendarmerie Boosts Crime Fighting with Drones and Radars, Reports 2 Million Traffic Offenses

The Moroccan Royal Gendarmerie has intensified its efforts to fight crime over the first nine months of 2024, achieving significant results. Thanks to the modernization of its equipment, particularly with the acquisition of new radars and drones, more than two million traffic offenses have been recorded.

Abdellatif Loudiyi, Minister Delegate to the Head of Government in charge of National Defense Administration, presented these figures before the Committee on Foreign Affairs, National Defense, Islamic Affairs and Moroccans Residing Abroad at the House of Representatives. He reported the deployment of more than 337,000 patrols on the roads of the kingdom, allowing for increased and thorough control of road networks and better detection of speeding.

Parallel to road safety, the Royal Gendarmerie has tackled drug trafficking. More than 9,100 cases have been recorded, leading to the dismantling of 47 criminal networks and the seizure of 198 tons of narcotics, mainly cannabis resin. More than 1,300 vehicles used for these illegal activities have been confiscated.

The fight against smuggling has also been at the heart of the Royal Gendarmerie’s missions: 751 cases have been processed, resulting in the arrest of 58 individuals and the seizure of 52 vehicles.

In total, more than 259,000 legal cases have been handled by the Gendarmerie. Nearly half of them (45%) concern crimes against persons, while 41% affect property. These actions have led to the arrest of more than 318,000 people.
