Moroccan Fugitive Arrested in Spain for Antwerp Kidnapping Case
Saturday 7 September 2024, by
The Spanish authorities have apprehended an individual actively sought by the Belgian justice system. This fugitive, of Moroccan origin, is suspected of having participated in a kidnapping in Antwerp, and was arrested on August 28th at the port of AlmerÃa.
The man was the subject of a European arrest warrant. The Belgian investigators accuse him of having sequestered a person between February 16th and 17th. The kidnappers allegedly demanded a ransom of 150,000 euros before releasing their victim. Although the Belgian police managed to free the hostage, the criminals had already fled with the money.
It was as part of the Marhaba operation dedicated to Moroccans residing abroad that the Spanish agents carried out the arrest. The suspect, who had just disembarked from a ferry from Morocco (Nador), did not put up any resistance.
Placed in custody, the individual was presented to a Spanish judge via videoconference. The Belgian authorities should quickly request his extradition in order to try him for the serious acts he is accused of. In Belgium, this type of offense is punishable by a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.
