Moroccan Fuel Prices Surge Past 10 Dirhams as Global Oil Costs Soar

In Morocco, the prices of the various fuels at the pump soared on Friday, February 4, 2022. This upward trend is expected to continue in the coming weeks due to the surge in Brent prices on the international market.
Fuel prices have been skyrocketing in recent days. On Friday, the price of a liter of diesel exceeded the symbolic threshold of 10 dirhams, reaching up to 10.84 dirhams per liter, according to a team from the website Le360 that visited a Casablanca gas station. As for the price of gasoline, it exceeded 12 DH, reaching 12.51 DH in some stations this Saturday.
This upward trend is justified by the fact that the pump price of fuel is directly correlated to oil prices on international markets. Since the beginning of this year, Brent prices have been rising to reach $88 on January 18, their highest level since 2014. On Friday, the Brent oil price rose to $92.42. The origin of this surge in the price of a barrel is the strong international demand, the geopolitical tensions involving major producers such as the United Arab Emirates and Russia, etc.
At this rate, the upward trend will continue in the coming weeks. This situation is worrying the Moroccan Parliament. Deputies have called on the government to find a mechanism that could reduce the impact of the rise in oil prices on the purchasing power of Moroccans.
