Moroccan Foreign Travel Spending Surges 70% as Covid Restrictions Ease

The Covid period is (almost) far behind us. After nearly two years of the epidemic and difficulties in leaving the territory, Moroccans have started traveling abroad again and therefore spending.
According to the latest figures published by the Office des changes, they have thus spent 8.5 billion dirhams since the beginning of the year, an increase of more than 70% compared to last year’s figures, when they had spent 6.1 billion dirhams in 2021 and 4.99 billion dirhams in 2020. This increase in spending abroad follows a controlled release of the tourist allocation by the Office des changes.
This has thus gone from 45,000 DH per year to 100,000 DH at the beginning of this year. The Office des changes had announced the implementation of a global allocation for personal travel of 100,000 DH, increased by an additional allocation of 30% of income tax, all capped at 300,000 DH per calendar year and per person. This allocation can be used on the occasion of personal trips abroad of any kind, whether they are tourist, religious or medical, specifies the office.
It should be noted that the 2022 version of the General Instruction on Foreign Exchange Operations has brought several liberalization and relaxation measures, both in terms of current operations and in terms of capital operations.
