Moroccan Foreign Investment Rebounds to 5.64 Billion Dirhams Despite Pandemic Challenges

Despite the impact of the health crisis, Moroccan direct investment abroad (MDIA) is gradually resuming. The volume of MDIA reached 5.64 billion dirhams at the end of September, compared to nearly 5 billion dirhams at the end of June.
Although the volume of MDIA has slightly increased, there is a gap compared to the same period last year, i.e. 28.5% year-on-year. As for the net flow of this MDIA, the statistics published by the Office des Changes show a decrease of 3.66 billion dirhams. But despite the decline, this flow has slightly improved compared to the first half of the current year, reports Aujourd’hui le Maroc.
Regarding the distribution of MDIA, nothing has changed at the level of the Moroccan nomenclature of economic activities. Thus, financial and insurance activities constitute a large part of these investments, with a flow of nearly 1.95 billion dirhams at the end of June. The automotive and motorcycle trade sector recorded a flow of 208 million dirhams. As for Moroccan investments in transport and storage, they are estimated at 13 million dirhams. The construction sector reached a flow of 82 million dirhams and the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector reached 1 billion dirhams. On the other hand, the communication sector shows a negative balance of 737 million dirhams at the end of June.
It should be noted that the structure of Moroccan direct destinations abroad has changed in the first half of 2020. Thus, the United Arab Emirates are the first in the rankings, followed by Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, France, Mauritius, Burkina Faso, Mali, Gabon, Egypt, Senegal, Togo, Luxembourg and Guinea. However, this flow is negative in Benin, the Netherlands, Niger, Congo and India.
