Moroccan Footballer Suspended Indefinitely Following High-Speed Accident

As he was about to leave the hospital, Sofian Kiyine, Moroccan international midfielder, victim of a spectacular accident on March 30 in Flémalle, in the province of Liège, received bad news.

On Monday, Sofian Kiyine was suspended "for an indefinite period" by OH Louvain, a 1st division Belgian club. In a statement, the club said it had made this decision "to allow the investigation" opened following the accident involving its attacking midfielder "to proceed calmly." "Sofian Kiyine’s state of health is relatively good given the circumstances of the accident. He could leave the hospital today (Monday, April 3)," it added.

On Thursday, while driving at high speed along the Meuse quays, at the level of Flémalle in the direction of Liège towards Flémalle, Sofian violently hit a roundabout at nearly 200 km/h before being ejected several meters and crossing the wall of the Louis Melin sports hall, located at the entrance to the town of Flémalle, at the intersection of the Quai Destrée and the Rue du Passeur d’eau. "Of course, like everyone else, we are very shocked when we see the images. There was certainly excessive speed, but no one knows exactly what happened," comments the main shareholder Peter Willems on the Louvain club’s website.

"The exact circumstances of the accident are not yet known, but it is currently the subject of an investigation. We are waiting for the results. We also want to discuss with Sofian himself about exactly what happened, then we will examine the next steps," he added, recalling that within the club, "we attach great importance to road safety." And to continue: "It is regularly repeated to the players to behave in an exemplary manner. We expect the players to use an appropriate driving style. But let’s wait for the results of the investigation and not prejudge the facts."
