Moroccan Fisheries in Crisis: Experts Warn of Overfishing and Resource Depletion

Fishery resources off the Moroccan coast are threatened with depletion due to their overexploitation for industrial purposes. Voices have been raised calling on the government to review its policy in the sector.
These are the professionals gathered within the National Union of Officials of the Ministry of Maritime Fisheries, reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribiya, stressing that they have sounded the alarm on the overfishing observed in Morocco in recent years.
In a statement, these officials have once again warned the government about the continuous depletion of fishery resources in the maritime fishing sector in Morocco, urging it to reconsider the sectoral policy that is mainly adopted to satisfy, they claim, certain lobbies in the management of marine resources.
According to the union, it is the use of these fish for the production of meal, fish oil and other practices that has intensified their waste.
To remedy this, the professionals recommend that the authorities review the decisions that have had adverse consequences in the management of the sector. It is necessary to "respect all the commitments made by the administration in the previous official minutes signed between the two parties, and to open a serious and responsible dialogue with the National Union of Employees of the Ministry of Fisheries to find appropriate solutions to the problems in which the sector is struggling," they stressed.
