Moroccan Film ’Sofia’ Wins Best Narrative at International Women’s Film Festival

"And the winner is... The Moroccan feature film Sofia". This is the verdict of the jury of the prestigious award for best narrative film at the 41st edition of the International Women’s Film Festival. It was awarded to director Meryem Ben M’Barek.
This took place during a film event organized from November 20 to 24 in Florence, northern Italy, where 40 films by directors from Arab, African and European countries were competing.
Sofia was warmly acclaimed by the director of the International Women’s Film Festival, Paola Paoli, reports the Moroccan press agency (MAP), specifying that she particularly emphasized the technical quality of the film and the relevance of the subject "addressed with courage and intelligence".
The values transmitted by the director are part of the film’s narrative, through the dialogue, the script, the plot and the various sequences designed and staged "with finesse". This, in the eyes of the festival director, reflects the progress made by the kingdom in promoting the situation and rights of women, as well as the dynamism of Moroccan cinema, particularly in addressing issues related to women.
In addition to several awards at various international festivals, "Sofia", which had received the screenplay award at Cannes in 2018 in the "Un Certain Regard" section, tells the story of a 20-year-old woman whose life is turned upside down.
