Moroccan Film "Casablanca Beats" Wins Accolades at Cannes, Spotlights Youth Culture

The Moroccan director and screenwriter Nabil Ayouch, who was in the running for the Palme d’Or at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, received the Cinema Positif Prize of the Festival for his feature film "Haut et Fort". He was also awarded the Best Achievement in Cinema prize, a tribute to his entire career, awarded by the humanitarian organization Union-Life International.
The film "Haut et Fort" was screened on Thursday evening in the official competition, at the Grand Théâtre Louis Lumière, the mythical hall of the Palais des Festivals in Cannes. The film "Haut et Fort" tells the story of Anas, a former committed rapper residing in the cultural center of a working-class neighborhood in the city of Casablanca.
Encouraged by their new teacher, the young people of the center will try to free themselves from the weight of certain traditions to live their passion and express themselves through hip-hop culture. It is a film described as "Delightful" (France Culture), "Vibrant" (Screen), "Powerful" (Marianne), "strong and sincere", (VH Mag), or a "Moroccan West Side Story" (Jeune Afrique). "Haut et Fort" was widely acclaimed by film professionals and the media present in Cannes.
This selection is a first in the history of Moroccan cinema at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
The Palme d’Or of the Cannes Film Festival this year was awarded, on Saturday, to the French Julia Ducournau, for her feature film "Titane".
