Moroccan Farmworkers Vanish from Spanish Asparagus Fields in Labor Experiment

Six of the seven Moroccan seasonal workers recruited by the Union of Agricultural Producers (UPA) of Granada, as part of a pilot experiment for the asparagus campaign, have disappeared.
The seasonal workers were hired for the asparagus campaign and were housed in the Agrolachar accommodations, explains Nicolás Chica, the general secretary of the UPA Granada, specifying that the procedures were carried out in collaboration with the UPA of Huelva and the sub-delegation of the government of the two provinces, the asparagus campaign preceding that of strawberries in Huelva.
Three of the seasonal workers first fled on the third day of their stay in Spain, before three others followed suit a few days later. "We benefited from a subsidy during the pandemic and there was a remaining fund that we used to recruit seasonal workers in order to speed up the deadlines, but this project did not go as we had hoped," Chica regretted.
Informed of the situation, the sub-delegation of the government alerted the security forces and bodies and canceled the work and residence permits of the six fugitive seasonal workers. The seventh was transferred to Huelva to participate in the strawberry campaign. Disappointed by this first experience with the Moroccans, the UPA Granada now plans to recruit seasonal workers from Central and South America.
